Fabrics and Pattern Play

Fun fabrics and pattern play has always been a unique way to add character and personality to a space. In interior design, there are so many ways to mix and match patterns, colors and textures with fabric including: pillows, bedding, draperies, and upholstery. Mixing patterns can be done in any design style and can be easily customized with patterns and colors that best represent your taste and the aesthetic you're hoping to achieve. This makes it that much more fun to experiment and have fun with design!

Some of our favorite ways to mix and match fabrics is by using fun patterns on pieces that are easier to replace such as pillows or throws. These pieces can be swapped out seasonally or if you just tire of them without the need to replace any larger, more expensive pieces like sofas or window treatments. Layering pillows in a variety of colors and patterns on your bed or sofa can add that flare that’s as subtle or as bold a statement as you're looking for.

Another way in which we love incorporating more patterns is with upholstery. Finding a new chair you love that adds that pop of color you’ve been looking for, or even reupholstering a pre-loved piece that you want to revive with a stripe or floral pattern. Utilizing fun and interesting patterns in upholstery for your sofas, chairs, etc. makes for a grand statement in your space. As the more dominant piece of furniture in a room it will help draw the eye and set the scene.

A tip for mixing fabric patterns is to keep balance among your chosen patterns. Intertwine patterns with solids and small with large prints so that each design compliments the next rather than competing with it. Try mixing geometric patterns with florals or abstracts for some fun pattern play. Creating engaging contrast is the goal with pattern mixing. The same goes with color. Balance colors of varying light and dark shades that are complementary. Don’t be afraid to try the unexpected and play around with different color palettes to see what sparks joy and speaks to your personal taste.

Pattern mixing has always been an important element in interior design. It keeps a room interesting and adds so much character. Layering patterns, colors and textures in home design will help make your space feel more lived in and inviting. Whether you go the traditional or contemporary route, fun patterns always have a place in your home.
